About

Common Threads: Intersectional Methodologies of Architectural History

This student-led symposium celebrates the diverse voices and words of the 2020-21 Architectural History MA student cohort. For this live-streamed event, Architectural History students have invited speakers who are leading practitioners in their field and whose work speaks to the major events and concerns of today.

This year the students present a panel discussion responding to notions of historical narrative, unacknowledged histories and modes of representation. The title ‘Common Threads’ reflects a spirit of community and collaboration, fostered in the wake of social restrictions amidst the global pandemic. This year's cohort were drawn together to learn and work together remotely across the globe, and have formed a supportive group despite many never having met in person.

The focus on intersectional methodologies foregrounds a collective belief in the need to question and challenge established modes of presenting architectural history. It also reflects a conviction that not only must the discipline expand beyond traditionally canonical subject boundaries to include and centre previously overlooked histories and lives, but that it should do so by embracing radically new methods of research and dissemination of these subjects. The symposium is a chance to champion these collective concerns to a broader audience of academics, practitioners and the general public.
