Thinking by Modelling

Lecturer's Abstract

I have built little. But, I have built many castles in the air.
– Frei Otto, German Architect

Josep Miàs describes the work of his practice, MiAS Architects, as an ‘exercise of classic gymnastics’, in which a parallel activity of personal, intellectual and independent investigation is developed and included in the project.

Josep argues that drawing is the basic element to measure the potential of each proposal. For example, through drawing in space, one is able to efficiently verify the validity of the drawing itself. Josep suggests that perhaps we are only able to conceive of what we are able to draw, establishing a mechanism of order and control in ones work. He believes that in these moments of production, a project can fade away in favor of work that acquires meaning of its own.

Josep Miàs is Professor of Architecture at The Bartlett and Visiting Professor at UNISS, Sassari, Italy. He is also acting Director of international architecture firm MiAS ARCHITECTS founded in 2000.

MiAS Architects is internationally recognised for both its innovative experimental projects and its practice combining sustainable technology, innovative manufacturing and cutting edge construction practices. They have won many international awards including, the Architizer Building of the World Award (2013), the Archdaily Building of the Year Award (2011), the Catalonia Construction Award (2009), and the AJAC Best Young Catalan Architect Award (2004).

Josep has taught at a number of international universities including the Escola Tècnica Superior d’Arquitectura de Barcelona, the Staedelschule, Frankfurt, Germany and Harvard GSD. From 1990 to 2000, Josep was Associate Partner to the office of Enric Miralles.
