Architecture Beyond Sight

Pereira argues that conventional architectural design processes are strongly visual, forgetting the creativity of balancing our sense of sight with other senses such as touch, hearing and smell through conscious perception. By instead starting from the condition of blindness, how we design has to be rethought. He will demonstrate his own work process, based on using multisensory techniques, such as physical modeling, making tactile surfaces and long stays on site, in order to build up a total sensory understanding of context.

Current architectural production is often too ocular-centric. Architecture developed from the condition of blindness enables the exploration of the Integrated Invisibility design principle, that is, built space considered from perceptions beyond sight.

Biography

Carlos Mourão Pereira is an architecture researcher based in Lisbon, Portugal. He graduated in Architecture at the University of Lisbon in 1997 and has run his own practice for many years. He became blind in 2006 and maintained his architectural activity, in research, teaching and in professional practice. In 2013 he obtained his PhD in Architecture from the University of Lisbon.
