Keynote Lecture:
Christine Gaspar, Centre for Urban Pedagogy, New York

8 May 2018, 6:30-8:00pm
Room G.12, The Bartlett School of Architecture, 22 Gordon Street, London

Christine Gaspar, Director of the Centre for Urban Pedagogy, New York, will give the keynote lecture. The Center for Urban Pedagogy (CUP) is a non-profit organisation that uses the power of design and art to increase meaningful civic engagement.

The centre's projects demystify the urban policy and planning issues that impact communities so that more individuals can better participate in shaping them. Their projects are collaborations of art and design professionals, community-based advocates and policymakers, and staff. These projects take on complex issues—from the juvenile justice system to zoning law and food access—and break them down into simple, accessible, visual explanations.

One-day symposium

9 May 2018 10:00-6:00pm
Room 6.02, The Bartlett School of Architecture, 22 Gordon Street, London.

This one-day symposium will discuss the past, present and future of urban rooms and civic schools in the UK to inform the vision for UCL’s Urban Room at UCL's new campus in the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, Stratford. The event brings together practitioners and thinkers of different generations who have worked to engage people with their surroundings in order to discuss further action. It will uncover their history, discuss its current iterations and explore future possibilities.

The symposium will be accompanied by an exhibition of current proposals in Britain and archives of original material from past urban rooms in the UK.
