About Accelerate into University

Accelerate into University is a widening participation programme organised by Open City and run in partnership with The Bartlett School of Architecture, UCL for the fifth year and sponsored by Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners.

This year, 32 students from London participated from backgrounds that are under-represented in the building design professions. Skill development workshops were taught by Open City in collaboration with The Bartlett focusing on mapping, sketching, model-making techniques, recording skills and application advice. The students also spent four months receiving mentoring sessions from ten different architectural practices.

We believe this programme is incredibly important to help create a design workforce that reflects the society it is designing for. The mentees are majority female and from majority minority ethnic backgrounds.
Suzie Zuber, Open City

Through the Accelerate programme the students gain an insight into both university and working life as an architect, develop skills not taught in schools that are relevant to studying the built environment and produce a presentation piece for their portfolio ahead of their university applications.
