UCL is #10 in the QS Subject Rankings 2024 for the arts and humanities

18 April 2024

UCL is ranked in the top 10 for the arts and humanities in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2024 and is the top London university for arts and humanities.

Ranked in the top 10 for the arts and humanities

UCL has been ranked joint 10th for the arts and humanities subject area in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2024, one of the most consulted university rankings. This places UCL as the top London university for arts and humanities in 2024.

The broad subject area of arts and humanities encompasses focused subject areas, including:

  • English Language and Literature – where UCL is placed 12th in the world
  • Linguistics – where UCL is ranked 17th in the world
  • Modern Languages – where UCL is placed 17th in the world

UCL Arts & Humanities is also home to the Department of Information Studies, included within the broad subject area of Social Sciences & Management.

  • Library and Information Management – where UCL is ranked 16th in the world.

To compile the subject rankings, comparing over 1,500 universities across the globe, QS used five key metrics (including academic reputation, research performance based on citations impact, and graduate employability), the precise weighting of which varies by subject to reflect differing research practices across disciplines. The QS World University Rankings, which rank universities overall rather than at subject level, will be published later this year.

Professor Stella Bruzzi, Executive Dean of UCL Arts & Humanities, comments:

“We are delighted that UCL has been recognised as a top 10 university for the arts and humanities in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2024. Our Faculty has nearly 200 years of leadership, innovation and inclusivity behind it, and we welcome this recognition of our sustained excellence in the areas of teaching and research in particular. This would not be possible without the expertise and commitment of all our staff and, of course, the brilliance of our students and alumni.”
