Paid job opportunity for History of Art Students – become a Student Journalist!

The History of Art Equality, Diversity & Inclusion Board is seeking to recruit five students who will work as Student Journalists in the Department throughout the remainder of the academic year.

The positions are open to BA, MA and PhD students and provide an opportunity to gain experience producing media content in response to a professional brief. 
 
The appointed candidates will each be asked to produce four contributions for the Departmental website between  28 February – 30 June. They will report to the Department’s Communications and Events Manager, with whom they will agree the brief and specific deadline for each piece of work.

Job description 

The student journalists will develop content for the History of Art department’s website that celebrates our department’s commitment to inclusion and equity. The journalists will each produce a minimum of four contributions for publication on the departmental website and/or social media channels by the end of June.  
 
One of these pieces of work will involve interviewing a PhD student or member of staff on their academic career journey. The other three pieces can be self-directed, providing they fit with the overall aims of celebrating diversity in the discipline and the briefs should be agreed in advance with the Communications and Events Manager. Contributions may be blog posts, articles, exhibition or event reviews, photo journalism, videos, podcasts or any other appropriate media.

Student journalists will also have access to activities and opportunities being run as part of a central student journalist scheme, including journalism masterclasses, mentoring schemes and a library of digital interviews with journalists. 

Eligibility 

The positions are open for students at any stage of their studies and currently enrolled in the History of Art Department. Applications are welcome from people from all sexual orientations and gender identities and particularly from Asian, Black, and minority ethnic candidates. 

Salary

The appointed journalists will each be paid an honorarium of £200. In addition, reasonable expenses (e.g., exhibition entry costs) will be reimbursed.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Candidates will need to have access to a computer with a good internet connection. Suitable applicants should have the following skills:

  • An interest in and commitment to equity and diversity
  • Excellent organizational, planning and time management’s skills with the ability to independently oversee multiple tasks against competing deadlines. Must also possess a strong focus on attention to detail.
  • Excellent writing skills
