The History of Art Department at UCL is seeking applications for the 2019-20 Leverhulme Trust Early Career Fellowships. We would particularly welcome applications from external candidates who are interested in working at one of the most dynamic centres for the study of art history and visual cultures in the world. As a Department committed to pushing the boundaries of the discipline, we are open to proposals that explore new ways of thinking about  traditional and non-traditional image and object production and consumption, across a wide global geography and covering a range of artefacts from traditional to new media. The research community is actively engaged with current debates and part of a vibrant global university.

Offering 50% match-funding for the salary costs of three-year academic research position, the scheme enables early career researchers to undertake a significant piece of publishable work. Applicants must have a track record of research, but should not have held an established academic appointment in the UK.

Early Career Fellowships aim to provide career development opportunities for those who are at a relatively early stage of their academic careers, but who have a proven record of research. The expectation is that Fellows should undertake a significant piece of publishable work during their tenure, and that the Fellowships should lead to a more permanent academic position. Approximately 100 Fellowships will be available in 2019. Fellowships can be held at universities or at other institutions of higher education in the UK.

The Trust will contribute 50% of each Fellow's total salary costs up to a maximum of £25,000 per annum and the balance is to be paid by the host institution. Given the prestige of the awards each Fellow may request annual research expenses of up to £6,000 to further his or her research activities.

Fellowships are tenable for three years on a full-time basis. The Trust will support requests to hold the award part-time over a proportionately longer period for health related reasons, disability or childcare commitments. Fellowships must commence between 1 September 2019 and 1 May 2020.

Full details of the process and guidelines can be found here.

Applications should be discussed with Professor Briony Fer prior to submission.

Application forms can be accessed through The Leverhulme Trust online application system. Applications not on the Leverhulme application form will be deemed ineligible and will not be considered.

Application forms should be saved as a PDF and sent to Rachel Fishwick by the end of Wednesday 2 January 2019 (the Department's internal closing date).
