Arte Povera and Beyond

Arte Povera and Beyond: Milan, Turin, Rome

This symposium on 1960s Italian art practices will take place on Saturday 12th March 2011 at the Italian Cultural Institute. The event has been organised and supported through the Centre for the Study of Contemporary Art at UCL and the Research Department of the London Consortium and will coincide with the exhibition of Pino Pascali held at the Camden Arts Centre throughout Spring 2011.

The symposium will focus on the development of artistic practices in the sixties along the Turin-Milan-Rome axis and will aim to investigate the emergence of new expressive modes in this period through individual and group endeavours.

Speakers

Nicholas Cullinan, Tommaso Trini, Gabriele Guercio, Matilde Nardelli, Ester Coen, Robert Lumley. Chaired by Briony Fer Speakers will be examining the significance and extent to which art practices were reconfigured through exhibition strategies, transatlantic exchanges, the integration of photography and experiments with cinema.

We are seeking to critically address this area of art historical investigation within post-war Italian art and create a platform for dialogue between anglo-american and Italian scholars and practitioners.
