Biography

Katharina Richter is Associate Lecturer (Teaching) in Sustainable Development in Latin America and the Caribbean at the UCL Institute of the Americas. She also holds a position as Associate Tutor in International Development at Birkbeck, University of London (2021-2022). Previously, Katharina was Associate Lecturer at the Goldsmiths Department of Politics and International Relations (2016-2019), where she taught International Relations and political theory with emphasis on the role of colonialism in the making of the modern world.

Katharina submitted her PhD in Politics in October 2021 at Goldsmiths, University of London, and obtained her doctoral degree in February 2022. Her doctoral thesis presents an inter-epistemic dialogue between degrowth and Buen Vivir, exploring how to live well within social and environmental boundaries. The research was supported by funding from the Royal Economic Society, the British Federation of Women Graduates and the Society for Latin American Studies, amongst others. Katharina obtained an MSc in Ecological Economics from the University of Edinburgh in 2013, and completed her BA in International Relations and Human Rights in 2011 at Malmö University, Sweden.

Research Summary

Katharina is interested in decolonial environmental politics and equitable development in times of climate crisis. Her research contributes to nascent, yet rapidly growing debates around decolonising degrowth. The PhD’s qualitative study of Buen Vivir in Ecuador furthermore addresses a lack of available empirical data in the literature on alternatives to development in Latin America.
