3 March 2022

Dr Nick Witham and Professor Jonathan Bell - new and outgoing Head of Department

We are delighted to announce the appointment of Dr Nick Witham as the new Head of Department for the Institute of the Americas. Dr Witham will take up the role from 1 September 2022 for a five year term. We warmly congratulate Nick (and ourselves!) on this appointment. By the same token, we would like to express our immense gratitude to our current Director, Professor Jonathan Bell, for his leadership, vision and enormous contribution to the development and thriving of the Institute. Professor Bell has been awarded a Leverhulme Trust Major Research Fellowship, which will enable him to focus on his new project 'The Health Care Closet: Sexual Politics and American Health, 1965-1995'.

Dr Witham says: 'The Institute of the Americas is a remarkable place. I am proud to have called it my home since joining in 2015, and to have worked alongside its talented students, academics, and professional services staff. I am thrilled to be taking on the role of Head of Department and look forward to what the next five years will bring!'

The UCL Institute of the Americas is a leading multidisciplinary specialist institution for the study of Latin America, the United States, the Caribbean and Canada.
