The BACS-UCL Canadian Studies programme will be holding its first online meeting of the new academic year via *Zoom on Thursday 26 October, 18.00 to 19.30 (UK timeHosted by UCL Institute of the Americas, the guest speaker will be Jeffrey Simpson, former National Affairs columnist of the Globe and Mail, Canada’s leading newspaper.  A prize-winning journalist and author, he is a veteran political commentator and has written eight books on Canadian politics and public policy. He is a recipient of the Order of Canada and is an Honorary Senior Fellow at the University of Ottawa.

Jeffrey Simpson will be speaking on the 30th anniversary of the October 1993 federal election, one of Canada’s most dramatic elections which saw the almost complete destruction of the governing Progressive Conservative party,  a landslide victory for the Liberal party and the election for the first time of two new regional parties, the separatist Bloc Quebecois and the populist Reform party from Alberta and BC.  He will be reflecting on the significance of that election and how much Canadian politics has changed in the intervening three decades.

The talk will be wide-ranging and we look forward to a full Q&A session with members of the online audience to get our new programme off to an exciting start.

The event will be chaired by Patrick Holdich (Honorary Fellow, UCL Institute of the Americas).

Please register for the event via Eventbrite.
