Economic recession, sharp devaluation, and high inflation have opened an opportunity window for the Peronist Party to come back to the Casa Rosada in Argentina. After a surprising victory in the primary elections, polls give Alberto Fernandez and ex-president Cristina Fernandez a relatively comfortable lead for the upcoming elections on October 27.
In Uruguay, polls give a substantial lead to former Mayor of Montevideo Daniel Martínez from the Frente Amplio coalition—in power for 15 years. Despite this, decreasing levels of support for the coalition potentially place the Partido Nacional in a good position to challenge the FA dominance in presidential elections.
The UCL Institute of Americas is delighted to host leading experts in Latin American politics to discuss the results of the presidential elections in both Argentina and Uruguay and the prospects of new elected governments in both sides of the Rio de la Plata.
