This module provides a comprehensive introduction to the politics of human rights in the Americas. It introduces students to the historical development of conceptions of rights and the central scholarly and policy debates in the region. The module focuses on the politics of human rights, and it examines approaches to the promotion and protection of human rights in the Americas. The module employs both a thematic, comparative approach and more specific case studies to examine the principal analytical debates in the scholarly field of human rights studies. The module is inter-disciplinary and it develops a comparative analysis of the region of the Americas as a whole. It invites students to actively develop interests in the causes of human rights violations and the effectiveness of policy interventions and strategies to advance the protection and promotion of human rights.
