***NOT RUNNING IN 2023/24***

Module leader: Dr Joshua Hollands

Credits: 15

Term: 2

Outline

This module will provide an in-depth exploration of the domestic United States in the 1970s. Students will consider the 1970s as a decade of political, social and economic crisis. Using primary and secondary sources, we will also examine the 1970s as a decade in which we can find the antecedents of our own time.

By exploring the crises of the era, the birth of mass incarceration, the contestation of rights revolutions and the rise of conservatism among other topics, we will re-examine the historiography of the decade. This module also uses film to consider how Hollywood responded to the events of the 1970s.
