Celebrating the UCL alumni community in China

31 May 2023

Over 500 alumni came together to make connections and renew old friendships at events marking UCL’s first delegation to mainland China since 2019.

UCL has an important relationship with China which stretches back to the 1800s. At a series of receptions across the country, including the university’s first events in mainland China since the Covid-19 pandemic, this longstanding connection was celebrated by a delegation including UCL President & Provost Dr Michael Spence.

The first stop on the trip was Hong Kong, where alumni gathered for a reception generously hosted by The Bartlett School of Architecture alumnus Tony Luk at his Andante gallery and co-hosted by Andrew Ng (Law 1985), Chair of the UCL Hong Kong Club. The 60+ guests ranged from recent graduates to longstanding members of the alumni club, including UCL Chair of Council Victor Chu CBE.

Next, the delegation travelled to Beijing to meet over 200 alumni for a celebration at the Four Seasons. This was followed by an event for parents of current UCL students, where Dr Spence answered parents’ questions. Recent graduate Tingyan Wang (MA Translation 2022), alongside her mother, also gave a speech, reflecting on her experience as a student.

At the final alumni reception in Shanghai, guests enjoyed speeches from Dr Spence and Professor Christoph Lindner, Dean of The Bartlett Faculty of the Built Environment, and networked over drinks and canapes.

After the successful trip, Emma Hallett, UCL’s Head of International Alumni Engagement, reflected: “It was brilliant for UCL to be back in China and to reaffirm the importance of our Chinese alumni communities. We were delighted to introduce Dr Michael Spence to so many of our alumni in person, and we are grateful to all the alumni who helped make each event so fantastic.

“In a globally connected world, your alumni community can be an incredible asset. Whether you’re looking to make new friends, expand your professional network, or just try something new, consider joining your local alumni group.”
