The TUT attended AI UK - the UK’s national showcase of data science and AI in March.

AI UK 2024 was an in-depth exploration of how data science and AI can be used to solve real-world challenges.

We heard from speakers such as technology writer Bill Thompson, Director of Foundational AI Research at the Turing, Professor Mike Wooldridge and Dame Angela McLean, Chief Scientific Advisor for the Ministry of Defence and Professor of Mathematical Biology at Oxford University, and many more.

The conference showcased a diverse agenda with three stages with panel sessions, interactive workshops, and in-depth talks exploring the latest trends and challenges in the AI landscape. Panel sessions covered topics such as "Is AGI really imminent?", a focus on the new real and Deep Fakes (in this instance, a show-stopping deep fake Drag Cabaret), and discussions on the use of AI in healthcare. We also heard about what children can teach us about AI. Interactive workshops offered practical insights into implementing AI ethics in the public sector, enabling access to NHS and Government data, and envisioning resilient and sustainable cities of the future.

Exploring the topic of Responsible AI with other leaders in the field, UCL's Professor Jack Stilgoe discussed essential work in this area. With RAI UK (a research centre working to understand how we should shape the development of AI for societal benefit) and BRAID (a three-year national research programme funded by UKRI/AHRC), the panel discussed how to unlock the potential of responsible AI.

We visited the "Tree-planting for Net Zero: Bespoke Digital Twins" stand - a pioneering AI project joint between University of Exeter and UCL, providing innovative technologies that will aid crucial decisions about land use changes. The ADD-TREES project is funded by UKRI, and involves UCL researchers: Alejandro Diaz de la O, Deyu Ming, and Mingda Yuan.
