Develop your technical skills and meet students with similar interests by joining the Cluster Club, and gain hands-on experience in High Performance Computing (HPC), Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Cloud technologies! HPC clusters can perform the most demanding simulations and data-intensive analyses and are used in a wide range of academic disciplines and industry sectors e.g. modelling climate change, developing energy-efficient catalysts, or understanding pharmaceutical drug-target interactions.
The Cluster Club will meet in the afternoon of the last Wednesday of the month, starting on April 24th at 2:30 pm. No prior experience is needed, but if you do have some then that is great too! The Club sessions will be a mix of teaching new skills and opportunities to work on challenges, followed by a social with refreshments.
We will be looking for students to join a team to represent UCL at the CIUK24 Cluster Challenge competition (various online challenges will be run from October onwards in the lead up to the main challenge at the CIUK24 conference in Manchester in December), with the winners from the CIUK24 Challenge representing the UK at ISC High Performance 2025 in Europe. UCL will also be looking for students to represent us at the SuperComputing 2025 conference in the USA! The Cluster Club aims to prepare you for these challenges which will use powerful HPC clusters and software packages, further developing your technical skills. If you are selected to take part in any of the challenges you will have your conference registration, travel, accommodation and other expenses paid for.
If you’re interested in finding out more, please sign up for the next Cluster Club session - you’ll also be able to attend the later sessions if you can’t make the next one, but the more you go to, the more you’ll learn (and hopefully, the more fun you’ll have)! We look forward to seeing you there…
About the Speaker
26th June 2:30pm to 5pm
Join us at the ARC Cluster Club on Wednesday 26th June, and learn how containerisation can help make your life easier! Software applications can be made to run in isolated user spaces called containers in any cloud or non-cloud environment, regardless of type or vendor - allowing code written on your laptop, for example, to be more easily ported to an HPC cluster.
Pre-requisites for this session:
To follow along with this workshop, attendees should install Docker Desktop on their personal laptop. Attendees will also need basic familiarity with the command line, Git, and Github. Sharing your own containers online will require accounts with Github and Dockerhub. We will be using the UCL Myriad HPC cluster and you'll also need to register for an account for this service.
Docker installation:
Docker can also be used online, without an installation, at https://labs.play-with-docker.com/
The following online lessons will help you familiarise yourselves with the Unix/Linux command line and Git, please work through them before the club session:
- Command line: https://swcarpentry.github.io/shell-novice/
- Git: https://swcarpentry.github.io/git-novice/
Register for accounts on Dockerhub, Github and Myriad:
- Dockerhub: https://www.docker.com/products/docker-hub/
- Github: https://github.com/
Once you have signed up for the session on Pretix (using the "Book now" button above) we'll send you details of how to register for a Myriad account.
