About our training

We offer practical, hands-on training for a variety of IT skills related to research including high performance computing, research software engineering and programming.

Overview

There is a large and increasing demand for training in specialist IT skills for research. To help meet this demand we have developed a portfolio of courses, delivered by our own instructors, covering research computing and research software development skills.

We offer courses which are freely available for all researchers at UCL, from postgraduate research students to senior research staff, as well as assessed modules for graduate students in conjunction with the Centre for Medical Image Computing and the MSc in Scientific Computing. Our instructors have long-standing expertise in employing a wide range of technologies in a research context, and many of us are certified Software Carpentry Instructors.

Partnerships

We work with external partners to source additional advanced training, including:

We work with organisations such as the Software Sustainability Institute and the Software Carpentry Foundation to deliver regular Software Carpentry Workshops and to help develop a mutually supportive network of researchers who develop software.

We contribute to UCL's postgraduate student teaching programme through the Graduate School and Centres for Doctoral Training. We also deliver two courses for the Centre for Medical Image Computing (CMIC): Research Software Engineering with Python and Research Computing with C++.

We are always interested in opportunities to work with new departments or organisations, and our courses can be tailored to suit specific research domains and different levels of user expertise.
