Bite-Sized careers seminars

This extensive programme of ‘Bite – Sized’ workshops is designed to enhance the career prospects of research staff at UCL. (Please note: all our workshops, activities and guidance interviews can contribute to your continuing professional development days.) Five different workshops are provided, each covering key aspects of career management:

Workshops:

Academic Career
Planning

This workshop, composed of several interactive group exercises, explores the key skills, experience and personal qualities vital to securing your first lectureship and progressing up the academic career ladder. Ideal for those who are at an early stage of their postdoctoral career and are contemplating an academic career, as well as those who are looking to make lectureship applications and who want to gain an overview of what academic recruiters want from them.

Effective Academic Applications (New Workshop)

This session is designed to equip you with the knowledge and skills necessary to make effective academic applications. By attending this workshop you will:

• Develop an awareness of the personal qualities, experience and achievements needed to be successful in securing research and teaching positions in a higher education institution, in the UK and beyond.

• Become more informed about academic CVs and motivational letters.

• Be able to effectively market your skills, experience and motivation for research and teaching positions to an academic recruiter in written format.

Please note that for this workshop you must bring a copy of your CV.

CVs & Application Forms (Non Academic)

How can you make sure that your CV or application form will impress an employer? In this session you will gain an overview of what recruiters (both academic and non-academic) are looking for and key advice on how to structure, and what to include on, CVs and applications forms (with examples). Note: you do not need to prepare a CV for this session.

Interview Skills

An interactive session with practical hints and tips. This is an opportunity to gain interview practice and confidence in a ‘safe environment’ and will help you to succeed. This workshop covers core interview skills applicable to both academic and non-academic positions, but also examines areas of questioning specific to each.

Career Planning Beyond Academia

This workshop is ideal for researchers who are still weighing up their career options or for those who have made up their minds for a career change but are unsure what to do next. In this interactive workshop we will examine what you have to offer non-academic recruiters in terms of skills and experience, explore ways to generate new career ideas and examine career change strategies.
