UCL Medical School Hubs

Introduction by Jane Dacre

Professor Jane Dacre

"UCL Medical School is one of the best in the world, and a major part of London’s Global University.

We already have high levels of student satisfaction, and are committed to achieving excellence. UCL is investing to develop new teaching and learning spaces, to support the new MBBS curriculum.

Summer 2013 is going to be an exciting time as we upgrade facilities across three of the Medical School’s sites: the Cruciform Hub in Bloomsbury, the Royal Free Hub within the Royal Free hospital and the Whittington Hub in the Highgate Wing. All three will have a strong Medical School identity, showcasing the distinctive UCLMS experience.

We are working to keep disruption to existing students to a minimum, whilst creating fabulous new hubs for the Medical School opening in 2013-14. There will be no reduction in the facilities available for students during or after the refurbishment, and  to allay any concerns, we will be re-providing both the Skills Centre and Library at the Whittington to a very high standard.

Check these webpages regularly to stay informed."

Professor Jane Dacre, Director, UCL Medical School

Introduction from UCL Estates

The UCL Bloomsbury Masterplan detailed the need for a significant increase in openly accessible workspaces to enhance the student and staff experience. It proposed a range of ‘hubs’ across the campus which should:

  • Provide a variety of good quality spaces suitable for student and academic study - individually or in groups
  • Be supported by appropriate services such as catering facilities & ICT resource
  • Encourage collaborative working
  • Create local hearts within the campus

The Masterplan is now in the implementation stages with a number of projects having been completed or in development. A series of ‘quick win’ projects took place over Summer 2012 to improve student social learning spaces, with a new extended programme of works being planned for Summer 2013. Larger projects in development include the Cruciform Hub, Anatomy Hub, SLSH Hub and Royal Free Hub.

UCL are also investing in improving staff and student space at the Whittington and Royal Free hospital sites.
