Biography

Owner of Bulkeleys and Carmichaels estates in Barbados, the compensation for which was awarded to his widow Ann Trotman née Hamilton and his two sons Joseph Trotman and Simon Lee Trotman (all q.v.). Also reportedly owner of Valley plantation, inherited from his father Henry Trotman, and not yet traced by LBS.

  1. Eldest son of Henry Trotman (c. 1736-1804) of Valley and Hill plantations, Barbados, and his wife Elizabeth (d. 1790). Colonel in St. George's Regiment of Militia in 1804, Member of the House of Assembly 1795/6 and 1815/16. Mentioned in the wills of his paternal grandfather, William Trotman of Ridge plantation in 1756 and his paternal aunt Ann Trotman in 1775.

  2. 23 and 24 April 1805 (1) Henrietta Steorgin [=Sleorgin] of Henly, Suffolk, widow (2) Simon Lee of Lyme, Dorset (3) Thomas Clarke Trotman of Island of Barbados, West Indies, esq. Lease and release of plantation called Bulkeley's, Barbados, for use of (1) for term of 2000 years then to the use of (3) for ever Consideration: Further instalment of £20000 purchase money plus interest as per articles of agreement.

  3. Thomas Clarke Trotman married Ann Hamilton in St Michael, Barbados, 16/10/1794.

  4. Eight children were born to this couple between 1790 and 1814: (i) Henry born c. 1790, matriculated Queen's College, Oxford, 16/12/1812 age 22. (ii) Mary Hamilton, married William Drake Sealy (q.v.) (iii) Ann (c. 1798-1887). (iv) Simon Lee (c.1802-1862). (v) Joseph (1804-1868). (vi) Thomas Trotman. (vii) William Clarke Trotman (1811-1893). (viii) Philip Phipps, born 17/09/1814 and baptised 26/10/1814 in Clifton, Gloucestshire.

  5. Memorial inscription at St Andrew's Church, Clifton, Bristol, west wall of the nave: “Sacred to the memory of Thomas Clark Trotman Esqr of the Island of Barbadoes who departed this life May the 7th 1826, aged 58 years. (Erected by his Widow.) Also of Ann Trotman widow of the above who departed this life Jany 24th 1874 aged 98 years. Also of Ann Trotman, their daughter, who died Augst 28th 1887, aged 89."
