Biography

Simon Lee Trotman, West India merchant, born in Barbados but mostly resident in Cheshire and Lancashire, inherited Bulkeley and Carmichaels estates in Barbados with Ann Trotman and Joseph Trotman (both q.v.) as the heirs of Thomas Clarke Trotman (q.v.).

  1. No record of his birth found, but c. 1803 in Barbados according to the later census records. He submitted a return in the 1826 Barbados Slave Register on behalf of Henry Trotman, an invalid. Son of Thomas Clarke Trotman and Ann Trotman née Hamilton (q.v.) who married in St Michael, Barbados, 16/10/1794. Brother of Joseph Trotman (q.v.).

  2. Simon Lee Trotman married Sarah Thomas, 11/12/1832 in Clifton, Gloucestershire. Living in Toxteth Park, Liverpool, Lancashire, for the baptisms of their children Thomas Lee (1835), Annette (1838) and Louise Wilhelmina (1843), where the father's occupation is given as merchant. Later censuses give the births of their two other children Hamilton (1840) and Erskine (1845) as Liverpool as well.

  3. Living at South Hill, Toxteth Park, Lancashire, age 35, Merchant, in the census of 1841, with Sarah age 35, Thomas age 6, Annette age 3 and Hamilton 18 months, plus Thomas Trotman age 15 (relation unknown ).

  4. "Whereas the Commissioner acting in the prosecution of a Fiat in Bankruptcy awarded and issued forth against Simon Lee Trotman, of Liverpool, in the county of Lancaster, Merchant, Dealer and Chapman, hath certified to the Court of Review in Bankruptcy, that the said Simon Lee Trotman hath in all things conformed himself according to the directions of the Acts of Parliament made and now in force concerning bankrupts; this is to give notice, that, by virtue of an Act, passed in the fifth and sixth years of the reign of Her present Majesty Queen Victoria, intituled “An Act of the amendment of the laws inbankruptcy,” the Certificate of the said Simon Lee Trotman will be allowed and confirmed by the said Court of Review in Bankruptcy, unless cause be shewn to the contrary, on or before the 3d day of September 1847."

  5. In the census of 1851 living at 2 Brunswick Terrace, Birkenhead, Cheshire, age 48, Merchant (West Indies), born Barbados, with his wife Sarah, 44, also born Barbados, Thomas age 16, Annette age 12, Wilhelmina age 8, Erskine age 6, one visitor, a governess and 4 female servants.

  6. "Patent Law Amendment Act, 1852. Notice is hearby given, that provisional pretection has been allowed... 319. To Simon Lee Trotman, of Liverpool, in the county of Lancaster, Merchant, for the invention of 2improvements for the more effectually securing or fastening envelopes or other like receptables, and the more securely affixing of postage-stamps, or other adhesive labels."

  7. In the census of 1861 living at 43 Queen Street, Everton, Liverpool, age 58, "Fire Insurance Agent", now a widow, with his children Annette, H.B. [presumably Hamilton], Louise and Erskine, his nephew Frederick Trotman and 2 female servants.

  8. Death of Simon Lee Trotman recorded Q4 1862, Liverpool. Memorial inscription in St George's Church, Barbados: "In memory of Simon Lee Trotman of Liverpool, born 1801 died 1862."
