Biography

Brother and heir of Peter Langford Brooke (q.v.), and claimant for compensation as the owner of Laroche's estate in Antigua: the money was awarded to his brother and other trustees (including Thos D. Broughton, q.v.) of Thomas' marriage settlement with Eliza Brooke (née Clough). Peter and Thomas Langford Brooke were the children of Thomas Langford Brooke (1769-1815) and Maria Broughton (1768-1841): Thomas Langford Brooke the younger's wife Eliza Clough was his cousin, the daughter of John William Clough and Eliza[beth] Broughton.

  1. According to Rubinstein, Peter and Thomas Langford Brooke's sister Jemima married William Dickson, an East India Company Major-General who died in 1848 leaving £120,000.

T71/877 Antigua claim no. 392 (Laroche's).

  1. William D. Rubinstein, Who were the rich? A biographical dictionary of British wealth-holders Volume Two 1840-1859 (London, Social Affairs Unit, 2012) reference 1848/11 (William Dickson). NB a genealogical source, http://www.thornber.net/cheshire/htmlfiles/brooke/html [accessed 30/12/2011], shows Jemima (born 1791) marrying Col. Sir Jeremiah Dickson KCB. Both William Dickson and Sir Jeremiah Dickson died in 1848, PROB 11/2077 and 11/2081: there is evidently confusion between the two.
