Research Description

My research focuses on the adoption of new information and communication technologies in healthcare, including in medical eudcation. Generally, I am coming from a sociotechnical perspective.

Current work includes in m-health (healthcare on mobile phones), where I am developing resources to support the adoption of new services. I look at the use of the Internet, in particular newer models focusing on user-generated content and peer-to-peer support. I also study sociotechnical implications of various health technologies, like electronic healthcare records and decision support systems.

I am a methodologist, with interests particularly in the workings of evidence-based medicine. I also do some work in the interface between risk management and health informatics, with a particular case study being anti-coagulation management.

Education Description

As well as teaching around my own areas of research, I have long taught statistics (introductory and more advanced) and research methods. I have been using online teaching methods more recently and have some ongoing research around VLEs and Web 2.0 more generally in the context of under- and postgraduate medical education.
