Continuing Education and Professional Development
The UCL Centre for Health Informatics and Multiprofessional Education - CHIME - offers a wide and varied assortment of opportunities for continuing education and professional development for learners from technical, clinical, managerial and administrative backgrounds..
The courses are taught by 'blended learning'. This mixes the flexibility of distance learning via the World Wide Web with the rich interactivity of a three-day block of face-to-face teaching in small groups.
Student numbers on all available courses are limited, so we encourage continuing education students to apply as early as possible.
Continuing Education
Continuing education serves those who want to study without committing to a postgraduate programme:
- to increase their understanding of an area
- to improve their career prospects
- to develop or update their skills and competencies.
What Short Courses are Available?
Continuing Education students can apply to study any of CHIME's taught graduate modules as a short course.
Details of module start dates and the dates by which applications must be received are shown in the Module Calendar.
Assessment and counting short course credit towards a graduate qualification
CHIME Continuing Education students have two options:
- To submit assessments alongside the students on the UCL Graduate Programme in Health Informatics and, on completion of the module, receive a certificate of attendance.
- To choose not to be assessed formally and, on completion of the module, receive a certificate of attendance.
Continuing education students who complete and are successful in the assessments in their chosen short courses may be able to transfer the UCL credits awarded towards the requirements of a formal graduate programme.
Requirements for Admission as a Continuing Education Student
Admission is at the discretion of the Department, and takes into account an applicant's academic background and professional/work experience.
Students also need to meet our minimum IT requirements to be able to interact with the UCL Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) through which we deliver the e-learning portions of each module. Full details can be found in the two IT forms which you will need to submit with your application.
Fees
Continuing Education fees per course for the academic year 2012-13 are:
| UK and European Union students | Overseas students | |
| Continuing Education | £873 | £1,748 |
Resources Available to Continuing Education students
Continuing Education students join the students on the UCL Graduate Programme in Health Informatics, a diverse group that normally includes clinicians, technologists, managers and administrators, often from all over the UK and abroad. For the duration of their chosen course, continuing education students have access to:
- eLearning resources
- academic tutors
- the Archway Healthcare Library
