Urban Visioning and Radical Imaginations: Rethinking methods for the just conquering of futures

Urban planning endeavours to shape the future, yet often grapples with short-term approaches dictated by political cycles. Whilst methods like visioning or master planning aim for long-term outcomes, they frequently fall short in fostering inclusive decision-making and addressing uncertainties – for instance, those related to climate change. 

How can we plan for the future of cities in ways that embrace inclusivity, foresight, and awareness of long-term trends? The DPU Urban Transformations Research Cluster invites you to join Dr Thaisa Comelli from UCL's Institute of Risk and Disaster Reduction as she shares insights from her work on Future Visioning. Drawing from her experience designing and implementing a methodology tested across nine global south cities (in Ecuador, Kenya, Tanzania, Palestine, Turkey, Bangladesh and Nepal) within the UKRI GCRF hub Tomorrow’s Cities, Dr. Comelli will explore avenues for integrating future-oriented methods into urban planning processes. The session will encourage reflective dialogues on the potentials of combining such approaches to promote critical and justice-oriented urban planning.
