UCL UCU: Support Protest v Oil and Money Summit (Oscars of Oil)

13 October 2023

Invitation to support a protest against the ‘Oscars of Oil’ (Oil and Money Summit) in London next week

On the 17th-20th October, the biggest names in the fossil fuel industry will gather in a luxury London hotel for the exclusive Oil & Money summit, nicknamed the 'Oscars of Oil' and rebranded as the ‘Energy Intelligence Forum’ in 2020. There the CEOs of Shell, Total, Equinor and Saudi Aramco and of the banks that support them will be celebrating their huge profits and planning how to increase them.

UCL UCU has branch policy to support action to tackle the Global Climate and Ecological Emergency.  As members will be aware  there is scientific consensus that massively reducing the use of fossil fuels is an urgent requirement if we are to be able to limit global warming to 1.5 °C and successfully mitigate worsening impacts of the climate emergency.

Oil companies exert significant influence on our policy makers, receiving £billions in public subsidies, taking over the COP27 climate conference and influencing government agendas based on their profits.  This year, the COP28 Presidency has been given to the UAE who have chosen the head of the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company as its President-Designate.

Fossil Free London are organising a protest against the Oil and Money summit, and UCL UCU encourages members to support the protest.
