27 October 2023

Six Motions and four Amendments have been submitted for members to debate and vote on at the EGM.

This is a reminder plus Motions and Amendments for our branch Emergency General Meeting today:

Friday 27th October from 13:00 - 14:00 on Zoom

UCU members should register for the EGM meeting using the registration link sent to them via email, by 12:55pm, to get a zoom link to join the meeting

This meeting has been convened to allow members to discuss the situation in Israel and Palestine.

There are six Motions (see Appendix 1) and four Amendments (see Appendix 2) for members to debate and vote on at the meeting. We will hear proposers for each of the motions and then have a general debate before voting.

In the interests of time, amendments to Motion 5 have been accepted by the mover of the motion and will be debated as part of the general debate. If Motion 5 is passed then the amendment to Motion 6 will have become policy, so will not be voted on.

Appendix 2: Amendments

NB. The following amendments to motion 5 have been accepted by the proposer of the motion, and in the interests of time will therefore be added to the substantive motion without a separate vote.

Amendment 1 to motion 5

Add to the beginning of the "believes" section, and renumber accordingly:

  1. The root cause of the conflict is the ongoing illegal military occupation and settlement expansion on Palestinian territories and the violation of the rights of the Palestinian people by the Israeli state. Therefore, there can be no lasting or just peace under the ongoing conditions of the Israeli siege of Gaza, or of Israeli occupation, colonisation, and apartheid across Palestine. These are conditions which Palestinians have a right to resist.

Amendment 2 to motion 5

add motion 6's "resolves" 3 to motion 5 as well

To call for an immediate end to UK military support for Israel, and for an arms embargo.

Amendment 3 to motion 5

Amend "resolves" 7 of motion 5 as (added text in bold):

To resist and protest attempts by the government and other institutions to restrict the right to free expression and protest, and support staff facing clampdowns on their free speech and/or academic freedom (within the law) on this issue and reject all dehumanising language directed at any group.

NB. If motion 5 falls, then the following amendment will be debated with respect to motion 6.

Amendment 4 to motion 6

Add to a new “believes” section:

**This amendment will be proposed and included in the debate.
