UCL-UCU: Next week’s picketing, and Valentines day demo, 14 February 2023

13 February 2023

Information on strike days, pickets and a demonstration outside ACAS where negotiations between UCU and employers are taking place

In addition to the special picket on Wednesday 15th this week outside Bidborough House and Main Gate (see below), please maintain the digital picket across all three strike days: please be sure not to work on Tues, Weds, and Thurs this week, even online and/or from home. Working from home (WFH) may seem a way of supporting the strike, but it is still working, and so undermines our action.

We also encourage members to attend a demonstration outside ACAS on Tuesday 14th, where negotiations between UCU and the employers are taking place.

  • Lobbying negotiations: #WeAreInsideTheRoomWithUCU
  • When: Tuesday 14th February, 12 noon
  • Where: ACAS offices, 50 Victoria St. SW1H OTL

In addition, Strike TV will be running on Tuesday 10:30-13:00, Wednesday 9-10:30, and Thursday 9-10:30. A full programme and Zoom registration link will be sent out soon.

Reminder of Friday’s message about the big picket turnout on Weds 15th:

Special picket on Wednesday 15th, 8am - 10.30am @ Bidborough House in Solidarity with Professional Services Staff and Researchers

This is to let you know about the next strike days in our ongoing action for pay, conditions, and pensions.

We have asked the national UCU if we could change the strike days that fall in our reading week. Unfortunately they have replied this afternoon to say this is not possible.

We also note that many UCL workers do not have a reading week (e.g., PS staff and Researchers). But we realise that asking many people to picket 3 days during reading week is a big ask.

Our Strike Meeting on Thurs 9th suggested instead that we should have a day of concentrated picketing, rather than asking our members to picket all three strike days.

For the above reasons, the UCL UCU Executive has decided to call for physical picketing on Wednesday only with the theme #NotOnlyLecturers. The picket details are above and we are asking as many members as possible to turn up on Wednesday to support our PS staff and Researchers.

Picketing will start at 8.30 and end at 10.30am, with a big, noisy session outside Bidborough House. We will also maintain a picket at the Gower Street Gates where people can pick up materials.
