UCL-UCU Green Group - opportunities to get involved

22 February 2023

As part of developing our branch capacity for engaging with sustainability-related matters at UCL, we are inviting members to sign up to the UCL UCU green group.

Some of you have already indicated you are interested in joining this group in the survey we ran last term. For those of you who didn’t get a chance to fill in the survey, we are writing to offer another opportunity to sign up to this group as we want to make progress on some of the areas members outlined in the survey.

Some of the specific activities you can join in with are:

  1. The first is to join a small group that will explore a possible branch position in relation to potential future initiatives on organisational travel, within UCL’s overall plan to achieve net zero by 2030.

  2. The second is a broader piece of work that will focus on creating an overall ‘ask’ of UCL by the branch in relation to energy efficiency across the UCL estate. Within the sustainability survey conducted last term, this was a major focus area for members and I’m keen to explore potential options.

  3. The third is to ask for any information you might have which relates to the forthcoming phase 3 of the ‘adjustments to building opening times’ initiative. This phase will involve complex buildings (e.g. buildings which include labs/ research spaces, interconnected buildings) that many members will use out of hours. The aim is to reduce carbon emissions by avoiding unnecessary heating, lighting and other energy use within buildings.

We are told that plans for more extensive consultations (compared to phase 1 and 2) are currently being created/ implemented. This may not affect your building but, if it does, it would be helpful for us to know about the following:

  1. Have any of you heard of consultations in relation to the building(s) you work within?

  2. Has this initiative been discussed at any staff meetings you have attended?

  3. Do you have any immediate thoughts about any changes to the opening hours in your building(s)?

If you’d be interested in the first or the second opportunity, please contact me (a.tacu@ucl.ac.uk) for more details. In relation to the third ask, any information would be gratefully received at the same email address.

Thank you for reading this and we look forward to hearing from you.
