UCL-UCU: National Climate Justice ‘Unite to Survive’ 21-24 April

17 April 2023

A note on the synthesis Report of the IPCC Sixth Assessment Report (AR6) and a call for members to support the upcoming ‘Unite to Survive’ Climate Action event

UCU nationally and UCL UCU locally recognise that there is a scientific consensus that unless carbon-based energy use is radically reduced, the world faces a crisis in which the poorest will suffer the most, but all of us will be affected. The dangers of inaction are extremely serious:

  • many locations may become uninhabitable
  • food shortages may threaten survival for many people
  • mass migration is likely
  • many species face extinction.

The Synthesis Report of the IPCC Sixth Assessment Report (AR6) published in March 2023 highlighted that projected CO2 emissions from existing fossil fuel infrastructure without additional abatement would exceed the the agreed 1.5°C” limit for temperature increases and further that rapid and far-reaching transitions across all sectors and systems are necessary to achieve deep and sustained emissions reductions and secure a liveable and sustainable future.

Despite the IPCC report warnings UK Govt policies continue to subsidise the  Fossil fuel industry, to fail to regulate for or to invest urgently and sufficiently for a low carbon economy.

In this context UCL UCU urges members to support the ‘Unite to Survive’ Climate Action event in London on 21-24 April.
