UCL-UCU: Amazing turnout and huge vote for industrial action - results

24 October 2022

This message is to tell you about the amazing results of our industrial action ballot and an Emergency General Meeting this Thursday, 13.00-14.00, to elect and direct our delegates to the upcoming Branch Delegates Meeting on Monday 31 October.

The meeting will take palce on zoom is your opportunity to feed into consultation on proposed industrial action and its timetable.

Motions on the next steps in the dispute are welcome for this EGM (within what is possible in a short meeting). Please get in touch with ucu@ucl.ac.uk if you would like advice on drafting.

Ballot Results

We are proud to announce that after much work from union reps, officers, members, and all levels of the organisation, we have achieved a massive turnout in the two national Industrial Action Ballots, and with that, a massive yes vote for industrial action. We thank all our members who voted and contributed to this excellent result.

The detailed results are:

For the USS ballot:

Strike: 84.9% Yes

ASOS: 90.1% Yes

Turnout: 60.2%

For the pay and conditions (‘Four Fights’) ballot:

Strike: 81.1% Yes

ASOS: 88.7% Yes

Turnout: 57.8%

UCU is the third trade union to break through the anti-trade union laws that require a 50% threshold in a national ballot, with an average turnout of almost 20% more than in the ballots last year; 20% higher than in 2006, when the union was formed. (UCU has grown in size since then.)

We hope that the employers will recognise that this ballot represents a huge message by their staff that they will not tolerate their attacks on pensions, pay, and conditions. The employers have a chance now to come to the negotiating table and avoid a damaging dispute.

If they do not act, this vote is a strong mandate to take the fight to them and fix the damage they have done to the USS pension scheme, and to our pay and terms and conditions.
