UCL-UCU: *final reminder* General Meeting today, Thursday 5 May, 1-2 pm

5 May 2022

Motion on financial solidarity for the Four Fights & USS disputes + arrangements for UCU Congress

This is a final reminder for our Extraordinary General Meeting today, Thursday 5 May, 1-2 pm. The meeting will consider arrangements for the 2022 UCU Congress and the decisions of the recent Special Conferences on the ‘Four Fights’ and USS disputes (which have now been published).

We have received one additional motion for debate (concerning the transfer of local branch funds to the national UCU Fighting Fund in solidarity with branches taking strike action) - see Appendix 1. This will be voted on in the meeting.

Are you interested in attending Congress and Sector Conference? All members are entitled to apply to attend these meetings as a delegate, which will be held online over three days, from Wednesday 1st June to Friday 3rd June inclusive (the 2nd and 3rd June are Bank Holidays). Our branch is entitled to 8 voting delegates. We will vote on nominations received at the meeting, but further nominations may be possible. If you are interested in nominating yourself, let us know by writing to ucu@ucl.ac.uk.

Appendix 1 - Financial solidarity for the Four Fights and USS disputes

UCL UCU notes:

  1. The UCL UCU branch currently holds £203,160 in the general account and £91,167 in the local hardship fund.
  2. UCU is about to call industrial action in 41 branches including a marking boycott, and further action will probably be needed in the autumn.
  3. To support this action, there is a call on branches like ours to make a significant contribution to the national fighting fund.

UCL UCU resolves:

  1. To contribute up to £60,000 to the national UCU Fighting Fund from general funds.
  2. To top up the branch hardship fund by up to £30,000 from general funds.
  3. Amounts (1) and (2) to be determined by the EGM and not to exceed £70,000 in total.
  4. To set up a GoFundMe process to permit members to donate days of pay for members in branches taking the marking boycott, and to call on members to participate.
