UCL-UCU: Strike Report - Days 3 & 4 + Day 5 Activities (Wed 2 Mar)

2 March 2022

Today, Wednesday is the last day of strike action this week over the Four Fights - pay, workload, casualisation and inequality - with pickets from 8am to 12 noon on UCL entrances.

Over 100 members picketed and protested on Monday morning, and - despite the Tube strike and some very wet weather in the early morning - some 50 plus did the same again on Tuesday. Campus was quiet on both days. We held hybrid strike committee meetings where we discussed the progress of the strike action (also attended by members of the UCL Digital Picket).

Colleagues held a moving protest and teachout at SSEES on Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. SSEES colleagues have published a statement here. There will be another teachout tomorrow.

Today, Wed 2 March

We encourage colleagues to try to attend the picket in person on our last day of this phase of strike action. Note that the underground may still be affected by the tube strike in the early morning, and the wet weather forecast.

Teachouts include:

  • 10:30 The neoliberal university - what does this mean? - IOE concourse
  • 10:30 Anticolonial geographies - British Museum
  • 10:30 Visions for a better world - UCL front gates
  • 10:30 Resisting the informatics of domination - 14 Taviton St (Anthropology)
  • 11:00 Strike-writing workshop - 22 Gordon St (Bartlett)
  • 11:00 Talking about Ukraine - 16 Taviton St (SSEES)

At 12 noon, colleagues are encouraged to assemble at the UCL Main Gates for a Mass Picket, after which we will march to UCEA/UUK offices in Tavistock Square for a protest called by London Region UCU.

This action is intended to dovetail with the NUS Walk Out / Teach Out action “A New Vision for Education”, which will take place in Torrington Square and Gordon Square from midday.

We are also running the #UCLDigitalPicket again with a programme of online activity, starting at 09:30.

Please make sure you observe the strike, and if you can, join the online activity or come in to UCL to participate in the action.
