UCL-UCU: Strike Report - Day 4 (Thursday 24 March) + Tomorrow's Strike

24 March 2022

An update on the fourth day of strike action this week and plans for the final day of industrial action.

As we near the end of this round of strikes, we should briefly report on the action on and off campus. We have had daily pickets from 8am - 12 noon, with colleagues contributing whole ‘shifts’ or an hour or so at times.

The teach out programme, on members’ initiative, has blossomed in the sunshine. Nearly forty were in attendance today on the Institute of Education forecourt this morning.

We have run a Digital Picket or ‘Strike TV’ every day. If you cannot attend the physical picket lines tomorrow you can join in from 10:00am.

The level of student support continues to be inspiring. Students have joined us on the picket lines, engaged with staff at teachouts, queued up for stickers and leaflets. Students are not insulated from the Cost of Living crisis, and the idea of standing up for basic pay and opposing pay inequality resonates widely.

It is fair to say that students are increasingly seeing our action as defending their future working conditions, not just their current teaching condition.

Tomorrow’s strike on campus

We have agreed to round off the strikes in style tomorrow.

We will be picketing entrances to UCL as normal from 8am.

Teach Outs include:

  • 10.30-11.30 The “No-Future University Survival Kit”, with Tom Western & Migratory Activisms students, Geography, 26 Bedford Way.
  • 11.00-12.00 “Trans Rage on the picket line: a teach out inspired by Susan Stryker”, Lo Marshall (IAS) and QueerAnth Network, Anthropology, 14 Taviton Street.
  • 11.00-11.15 Protest Choir and singalong for union members, Sandy Leaton-Gray and others! (“No talent required, only heart, as we sing some historic songs from the union movement.”), UCL Front Gate.

End-of-strike March

At 12 noon we are calling on all pickets, supporters, students and other trade unions to gather for the customary end-of-strike picket photograph at UCL Front Gate, Gower Street.

This will be followed by a March around campus via our striking neighbour colleges (LSHTM, Birkbeck College and SOAS), to UCEA/UUK HQ in Tavistock Square.
