UCL-UCU: 'Four Fights' & USS ballot results and next steps

12 April 2022

On the eve of the holiday period, we write to thank members for their participation in the recent ‘Four Fights’ and USS ballots.

The results for the ‘Four Fights' and USS ballots have now been published. At UCL, in the 'Four Fights' ballot nearly 80% (79.89%) voted for strike action, and 88% for Action Short of a Strike (ASOS); in the USS ballot 84% voted for strike action, and 90% for ASOS. Unfortunately, UCL UCU did not get over the 50% participation threshold set by the anti-union laws, so as we cannot take industrial action locally, we need to consider other ways to support members in those branches that can take action.

Nationally, 36 branches have a mandate for strike action on ‘Four Fights’ (with 38 for ASOS), and for USS, 24 branches now have a mandate for strike action and action short of a strike (ASOS). In total about 45% of our membership is covered across either or both disputes in 37 institutions.

Two Special Higher Education Sector Conferences, on the 20 and 27 April (for 'Four Fights' and USS respectively), will consider the national picture and decide how to shape our disputes in the third term and beyond.

We also thank members who helped with our Get The Vote Out campaign and otherwise encouraged members to vote.
