Strike report - day 2 (Tue 26 Nov) & future Teach-Out schedule

26 November 2019

Day 2 of our action saw determined and widespread picketing and departmental Teach-Outs across the UCL estate in Bloomsbury and beyond.

On the second day of strike action the picket at Malet Place during the Teach-Out led by members of the Department of English was so large it was in danger of overspilling into the street.

This morning UCU met with representatives from the University and College Employers Association (UCEA) about the ‘four fights’ dispute. Over 50 colleagues took the opportunity to protest in order to bring firm collective pressure to bear on employers representatives. Vicky Blake, UCU Vice President and lead of the negotiating team, spoke to the crowd. “It is your action that has brought the employers to the table, and it is your action that will deliver a result” she said.

Although the negotiation meeting ended late, she came to report to the Teach-Out on casualisation later in the afternoon. She said that the employers had been forced to change their tone and listen - in some cases for the first time. Previously the employers’ representatives were dismissive of any demand from the unions to take a national initiative on pay inequalities, workload and casualisation, saying that they had no mandate to discuss them.

Day 3: Teach-Outs tomorrow

Title: “Our University: A Manifesto (A joint UCU/The World Transformed Policy Lab Session)”
Time: 12.50pm to 2.00pm
Venue: SOAS Junior Common Room
Speakers tbc.

Over the last 20 years the landscape of British Higher and Further Education has been dramatically transformed. Students face staggering tuition fees, staff face mounting pressure from the TEF and REF, casualization is growing, and structural inequalities continue to be reproduced within our universities. What policies should the next government be looking to implement in HE? How can we transform the sector for the better?

This is a UCL-wide teach-out hosted by UCL UCU. These teach-outs take place immediately after our daily strike meeting.  Please note venues and speakers may change at the last minute.

As they become available we will be sharing details of departmental Teach-Outs on our website and on our social media channels (see below).
