UCL UCU Executive Committee's open letter in response to UCL HR Director's USS message to staff

12 January 2018

UCL UCU Executive Committee were concerned to discover that UCL HR Director, Fiona Ryland, had circulated an email relating to proposed USS changes to an undisclosed subset of staff on 8th January, inviting them to a town hall meeting on Wednesday 24th January - which is the day after joint negotiations on the future of USS are set to end.

Numerous members brought this matter to our attention, alarmed that some colleagues had received this invitation whilst others had not. This issue was raised with HR and subsequently an invitation to a second town hall meeting arranged for Thursday 1st February has been circulated today - hopefully, this time, to all USS members at UCL.

However, both invitations contained misleading and inaccurate information regarding the current dispute, specifically relating to three areas:

  • the deficit
  • the UUK proposals, and
  • the alternative proposals.

UCL UCU Executive Committee have therefore responded with an open letter to the HR Director, outlining the facts and requesting equal presentation time at both town hall meetings. You can read our open letter here.

Reminder: if you haven't yet voted in the USS ballot which closes on Friday 19 January please act now.
