Dr Lidia Galdino, RAeng Research Fellow and Lecturer at UCL, has recently been appointed Associate Vice President of the IEEE Photonics Society initiative, ‘Women in Photonics’.

In her new role Dr Galdino will now work alongside the IEEE Photonic Society to support the strategic direction of the diversity of their work and take steps to increase women's participation in this growing field through community engagement.

The Women in Photonics promotes activities that supports the participation, engagement and advancement of women in the photonics and optics society, through various professional development and technical events.

On being appointed as Associate Vice President Dr Galdino said:

I am delighted and honoured to lead the IEEE Women in Photonics initiative and continue to execute it's strategy and tactical programs to raise awareness and promote women in the photonics and optical communication field.

The IEEE Photonics Society forms the hub of a vibrant technical community in photonics and optics, and I couldn't be more excited to be joining and serving the Society

One of Dr Galdino’s first duties in her new role will be to speak at the IEEE British and Irish Conference on Optics and Photonics this December at the Royal Society, London. Here, Dr Galdino will discuss ways in which women can expand their engagement in Photonics and Optics.

Having Dr Galdino, both a member of the Institute of Communications and Connected Systems and Investigator on the Transnet Consortium, act as a role model for women in engineering shows the excellent diverse environment which is supported and cultivated at University College London (UCL).
