Engineering Cities: Gender Walkshops

To celebrate International Women in Engineering Day 2018, the UCL City Leadership Laboratory will collaborate with artists to explore how inclusive our urban infrastructure is, and begin to develop creative solutions. 

Taking to the streets, the artists will lead us in a creative exploration of the gendered nature of our urban environments and help us interrogate new possibilities for urban design. 

The walkshops will be followed by a drinks reception and discussion at The Petrie Museum of Egyptian Archaeology, led by Dr Ellie Cosgrave, Tiffany Lam, Professor Maureen Fordham, Grace Gelder and Tom Berry.

Please note that the walkshops will take place simultaneously and attendees can only take part in one walkshop. Due to to limited spaces, places on the walks will be allocated on a first come, first served basis. The walkshops will run from 18.00-19.30, with the reception and discussion at 19.30-20.30.

Grace Gelder: Building the Gaze - A Photography Walk
Explore the built environment in Fitzrovia and Bloomsbury through practical photography exercises and a group discussion. Focussed looking and photography isolate details in the landscape and can support us in peeling back the layers of gendered form and function.

No photography experience necessary but please bring a camera or smartphone (with battery & storage space)

Tom Berry: Bloomsbury Women - An Illustration Walk
This tour will explore Bloomsbury's many rich and varied connections to women. Through drawing and via a series of short readings, we will find out what the buildings in area tell us about changing attitudes towards women and gender roles, representations of women, and the history of suffrage and women's education. We'll focus on the outward appearance of buildings - their facades and decorative elements, to see if we can understand more about the society in which they were built.
