No 2, January 2024, Spotlights: ASCR Social Events in Term 1
Beer Tasting
The ASCR beer tasting took place in Term 1 and was both well attended and very enjoyable. Peter from the Southwark Brewing Company talked about the history of brewing and the different styles of beer. He will return next year to present “Beers of the World”, giving stories of how beer developed in different countries and cultures.

Housman Talks
Three varied and highly interesting Housman Talks took place in Term 1: Professor Mervyn Singer, Dr Francisco Diego and Dr Dean Sully.
AGM (Annual General Meeting)
The AGM was on Wednesday 15th November 2023, and was followed by the traditional curry dinner. One member had stepped down from the Committee this year, and all other members were willing to continue. Sam Blaxland (Institute of Education) was elected as a new member of the Committee for 2023-24. The next AGM will be held on Wednesday 20th November 2024.

Bar food service and opening times from January
- 10am to 7pm Monday to Wednesday
- 10am to 8pm Thursday and Friday
- Hot food every day 12pm to 2pm
- Hot drinks are available from the coffee machines at £1 per cup (cash only, no change given)
New cooler for the Housman Room cellar
The heat exchange unit in the cellar behind the bar broke down over the summer, so no real ale could be served for four months. A new cooler was installed in the cellar just before the Christmas break so there should be no problems with the draught beer next summer.

You are reminded that:
- No loudspeakers should be used in the Housman Room. If you are by yourself and planning on holding a Teams meeting, watching a video or playing a sound recording then please make sure you have headphones on. If you have other people with you in the Housman Room you will need to find another location if you want them to listen to the audio as well.
- Staff who are not members of the ASCR are not entitled to be signed in as guests. Staff of all grades have been eligible to join the ASCR since 2012, so meetings involving non-members should not be held in the Housman Room.
