One of the most daring yet poetic voices in the contemporary art scene, artist Chen Chieh-Jen (b. 1960, Taiwan) cultivates critical reflections on (post-) colonialism, power structure, state violence, and the system of neoliberalism.

While the artist’s primary media is video installation, in the production process, he has consistently experimented with community formation, working closely with and integrating the lived experiences of marginalised groups such as migrant workers, unemployed labourers and foreign spouses. This has added an activist quality at re-envisioning society in his practice. His oeuvre is, however, never the direct and faithful representation of social issues or social interventions to repair ruptures; instead, they are actions of creating heterogeneous perception and making reverberations that operate against the historical smear and amnesia.

Chen has held solo exhibitions at institutions including Mudam Luxembourg (2014); the Galerie nationale du Jeu de Paume in Paris (2011); Taipei Fine Arts Museum (2010); the Museo Nacional Centro De Arte Reina Sofia in Madrid (2008); and the Asia Society in New York (2007). His works have also been included in exhibitions such as Shanghai Biennale (2014, 2004), Biennale di Venezia (2009, 2005, 1999), International Istanbul Biennial (2007), Liverpool Biennial (2006), Biennale of Sydney (2006), Gwangju Biennale (2006, 2000), and Bienal de São Paulo (1998).

This talk is organised in collaboration with Taiwan Film Festival UK and leads up to Chen Chieh-Jen’s project with Tate Film on 6th and 7th March 2020, as part of their Pioneer Programme.
