Compliance status

This website is partially compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 AA standard, due to the non-compliances and exemptions listed below.

Non-accessible content

The content listed below is non-accessible for the following reasons.

Non-compliance with the accessibility regulations

Some key navigational elements such as dropdowns may not have accessible names. This fails 4.1.2 Name, Role, Value (A).

Some texts labels may not have a suitable contrast ratio where colour palettes are derived dynamically - generally this is only for hover states. We will be improving the selection of colours in these instance in future. This fails WCAG 1.4.3 Contrast (AA).

There may be multimedia content which cannot be paused, stopped or hidden. This fails WCAG 2.2.2 Pause, Stop, Hide (A).

There may be visual content where there are flashes more than 3 times per seconds. This fails WCAG 2.3.1 Three Flashes or Below Threshold (A).

Videos and Audio may not have captions or transcripts available. We adding these moving forward but may not be able to produce these historically. This fails WCAG 1.2.1 Audio-only and Video-only (Pre-Recorded) (A),  WCAG 1.2.2 Captions (Pre-Recorded) (A).

Audio Descriptions are not available for some multimedia content. This fails WCAG 1.2.3 Audio Description or Media Alternative (Pre-Recorded) (A), WCAG 1.2.5 Audio Description (Pre-Recorded) (AA).

Images are missing alternative text throughout the site, meaning users may not receive descriptive content of images. We will be adding alt texts as appropriate as we are able to moving forward. This fails WCAG 1.1.1 Non-text Content.

Some links may not be clearly described. This is generally in historical content and will be revised on an ongoing basis. This fails WCAG 2.4.4 Link Purpose.

Disproportionate burden

This section covers issues that we cannot fix right now. We’ve assessed the cost of fixing these issues but believe that doing so would be a disproportionate burden within the meaning of the law.

Content that’s not within the scope of the accessibility regulations

This section covers issues that we do not need to fix right now. The law calls these exemptions.

Some parts outside of the 'core' Slade School of Fine Art website, but within the scope of the URL prefix https://www.ucl.ac.uk/slade/ are archive materials, with some components dating back to the 1990s. These are often artist created websites and do not adhere to accessibility standards, but are presented for historical reference and on behalf of the artists concerned. Please contact us if you need help accessing any of this older content.

Third-party content

Our websites contain third-party content. We do not have control over and are not responsible for the accessibility of this content, but we make best endeavours to work with the third-party to improve its accessibility. This may include:

  • links to non-UCL websites
  • content/functionality on our website
  • content hosted on other websites, such as social media sites.

To help accessibility compliance across the sector, University College London supports searchBOX , a centralised, independent directory of third-party accessibility information.

searchBOX catalogues the contact information and accessibility statements of third-party suppliers, enables the sharing of community-generated accessibility statements, and allows users to map their supplier ecosystem.

Users can access third-party accessibility statements using the free searchBOX Finder service.

University College London encourages all our partners and suppliers to support this effort by ensuring that their accessibility information is included in the searchBOX directory.

Our testing processes

We tested the website using a combination of manual and automated checks alongside reference to the existing accessibility reports provided by the third party systems that make up parts of the process.  If you find an issue we have not yet identified, you can report it to us. We’ll pass this information to the website owner who will review the issue, make sure it is included in our plan to fix issues and add it into the accessibility statement when it is next updated.
