Facilitator Development: Leading Adult Learning

This two-day programme will help you become an effective facilitator of adult learning. It's aimed at those who design and lead professional development programmes for teachers and educators.


  • learn about adult learning and the role of the facilitator
  • explore what the research says about effective facilitation
  • practise a range of facilitation styles and techniques 

You'll also be able to assess your facilitation skills and seek constructive feedback using the UCL Institute of Education Facilitator Competency Framework.

This programme is run by the London Centre for Leadership in Learning (LCLL) at UCL Institute of Education (IOE).

Course structure

You'll take part in two days of face-to-face sessions, involving both theory and practical activity.

In between the two session you'll be expected to carry out focused study tasks.

You'll also read about evidence-based approaches to adult learning to enhance your understanding of effective facilitation.

Course content

Session 1

In the first session you'll:

  • explore definitions of facilitation and the role of the facilitator
  • develop an understanding of adult learning
  • explore and practise a range of facilitation styles and techniques
  • have an opportunity for peer and self assessment

Session 2

In the second session you'll:

  • explore strategies for dealing with difficult situations
  • develop an understanding of how coaching skills can enhance the facilitation of learning
  • practise planning a session
  • consider the merits and challenges of co-facilitation

Who the course is for

This course is for specialist leaders of education (SLEs), lead practitioners and facilitators of adult learning who design and lead professional development programmes for educators.

Learning outcomes

The programme will help you to:

  • explore the research on effective facilitation
  • understand adult learning and the role of the facilitator
  • practise a range of facilitation styles and techniques
  • take part in self and peer assessment against the IOE Facilitator Competency Framework


You'll receive a certificate of completion after attending both sessions.

Hilary Adli

Hilary is Bespoke Programme Leader at LCLL. She works in partnership with teaching school alliances, academy trusts, schools and local authorities in the UK and overseas in the state and independent sectors to design and facilitate bespoke professional development programmes for school leaders at all levels. Before joining IOE, she was a senior leader in primary, middle and secondary schools for 26 years, specialising in professional development, learning and teaching, performance management and school improvement processes.
