CLEAPSS Introduction to biology and chemistry

  • 7 hours
  • 1 day

Course overview

The objective of the course is to enable technicians to gain an understanding of how using CLEAPSS’ resources and adopting good practical techniques can help them support biology and chemistry safely and effectively.

There will be a particular focus on interpreting information on the Hazcards for some common chemicals used in biology and chemistry practical work and using CLEAPSS Recipe Sheets to prepare solutions of these chemicals.

There will also be the opportunity to identify hazards and how to overcome the risks associated with setting up and using apparatus typically used in biology and chemistry.

Course structure

During the day the following will be covered:

  • Risk assessment in school science – a quick overview;
  • An introduction to interpreting information on CLEAPSS Hazcards and Recipe Sheets;
  • Choosing appropriate personal protective equipment;
  • Preparing solutions following CLEAPSS Recipe Sheets, including simple adaptations to the recipes;
  • Routine laboratory techniques;
  • Troubleshooting issues associated with setting up and using apparatus commonly used in biology and chemistry practical work;
  • Clearing up after practical activities including cleaning glassware and an introduction to dealing with waste.

Jane Major

Jane Major works as an adviser for CLEAPSS.

CLEAPSS provides advice and guidance on all aspects of practical work in science, technology and art. This guidance explores ideas for exciting and engaging practical activities that fire pupils' imaginations. Then, unlike many alternative resources, it goes on to show teachers and technicians, in detail, how to translate these ideas into safe and exciting classroom experiences.

CLEAPSS has a membership of more than 28,000 schools and colleges, mainly in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, where its advice is recognised by HSE, DFE and OFSTED as representing best practice in these areas. As such, it's used by employers as the basis for them to discharge their responsibilities under the H&S at work act, 1999.
