Third year SEAHA students visit Pisa for training in digital methods

In March 2017, third year students travelled to the SEAHA partner, CNR-ISTI (Istituto di Scienza e Tecnologie dell’Informazione), Pisa, Italy as part of this year’s cohort activities, organized by the University of Brighton. The Visual Computing Laboratory at ISTI are leaders in the field of applying visual technologies (computer graphics, vision, image processing, 3D scanning and modelling) to Heritage Science. During the week training course, we attended lectures and demonstrations on a range of 3D digital technologies and heritage applications. Through the training, students were able to gain an in-depth knowledge of the theory and application of scanning and modelling, as well as the data analysis, visualizing, and fabricating of 3D models using tools such as MeshLab and 3D-Hop.
The training was an unmatched opportunity to learn about digital systems from the experts who created them. The technologies can be used with a wide variety of heritage material, so that the skills the students learnt will not only be applicable during their research projects, but in their future careers as heritage scientists. SEAHA 3rd year doctoral student Natalie Brown described the trip as an all-round “great week of learning, sight-seeing and experiencing Italian culture.” Trip organiser and SEAHA Co-Director for University of Brighton, Dr Roger Evans, described the trip as
“Very informative and a great experience for the students, combining the use of complex tools with a broader understanding of why this kind of analysis is difficult, which is essential for them to make good choices for themselves and future teams they may find themselves working in, and one day leading.”
