Engineering Applications of Earthquake Early Warning Systems
My PhD project mainly addresses the application of Earthquake Early Warning Systems (EEWS), and Semi-Active Structural Control Systems, aiming at the vulnerability reduction of constructed facilities due to ground shaking and the improvement of seismic behaviour of such civil structures.
Active structural control systems (e.g. electro-hydraulic actuators) have shown large electrical power input for structures' mechanical properties manipulation, and power supply during earthquake events is unlikely to be reliable. Hence, the main focus of this investigation is the design of controlled structural systems using the early warning information provided by EEWS combined with semi-active structural control devices able to modify the mechanical properties of structures consuming considerable lower electrical supplies (e.g. 0 - 10 V).
