Funder Policy Updates

14 January 2021

Research Funders regularly update their terms and conditions of funding. Review the latest changes to our major funder’s terms and conditions.

Funder policy updates

UK Research and Innovation

If your department holds or regularly applies to UKRI Councils you should familiarise yourself with their new terms and conditions for funding which were released in November 2020.

Summary of some of the changes include:
•    Expectations on the organisations that UKRI fund with regard to tackling bullying and harassment.
•    Due Diligence requirements on ANY third party used to deliver the project, no longer just overseas partners.
•    Further clarification with regard to eligible expenditure on research projects.

UKRI have also launched a new integrated website and funding finder.

Wellcome Trust

From 1 January 2021 Wellcome Trust have implemented a new open access policy which applies to all journal articles that report original, peer-reviewed research funded in whole or in part by the Wellcome Trust that are submitted from 1 January 2021.

They must be made open access in PubMed by the official date of publication, and be published with the CC BY licence unless the Wellcome Trust has agreed, as an exception, to allow publication under CC BY-ND.

The Wellcome Trust does not support publication charges (for instance page and colour charges): these costs may not be included in new Wellcome Trust research grant applications or charged.
