The award is for recognition of a body of applied mental health services research led by Professor Hassiotis, acknowledging international reach, academic outputs and public engagement.

When asked about the award, Professor Hassiotis said,

“Professor Steven Reiss was an American scientist and pioneer in recognising the mental health challenges people with intellectual and developmental disorders face. He coined the term diagnostic overshadowing and showed how often this gets in the way of appropriate assessment and treatment. I am honoured to have won the Steven Reiss Research award by an organisation (NADD) that has made the study of mental ill health and support of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities their mission.”

Discussing her research, Professor Hassiotis went on to say, “Clearly the end point is the improvement of diagnosis and treatment of mental disorders in people with intellectual and developmental disorders, enhancement of their quality of life and of their inclusion in society.”

NADD presents five awards annually at the NADD Annual Conference.
